Teacher of the Year

Veteran Fairview teacher Carolyn Pannell, right, was named Jackson County's Teacher of the Year Tuesday (Aug. 19) during a banquet at Western Carolina University's Ramsey Center. Superintendent Mack McCary, left, and Central Carolina Bank Assistant Vice President Christina Shook presented Pannell with a plaque and a $1,000 check to be used for her professional development. CCB sponsors the annual award, and the winner is chosen by a panel of educators and community members. This year's other school winners were Beth Bolognia of Blue Ridge; Stephen Harrison of Cullowhee Valley; Linda Potter of Scotts Creek; Kathy Ammons of Smokey Mountain Elementary; and Gerald Parker of Smoky Mountain High. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
