Tuckasegee Baptist Association volunteers,

Pittman load this ton-and-a-half truck with food for the Baptist
Children's Home Aug. 22. So much food was collected by the TBA
that two truckloads and one van were needed to transport the boxes.
The event marked the first-ever statewide roundup for BCH. In
response to a decline in income and a projected deficit of $4
million for this fiscal year, BCH is experiencing large cutbacks,
according to Lloyd Fish from BCH. Several cottages, including
Moody Cottage in Franklin, will have to be closed and 60 beds
across the state will be lost, he said. "From your pantries
to their plates, the food drive is vital to the care of the boys
and girls entrusted to the BCH," said its president, Michael
Blackwell. In addition to 23 churches, QC Apparel also participated
in TBAs food drive. The goal of the statewide drive
was to provide enough food for a whole year for the Baptist Childrens
Homes, said TBA secretary Gracella Morris, who helped coordinate
the local effort. Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
