Sylva Meyrowitz has talked about coming here
for the longest time to visit the town that shared her name. She
finally arrived last Thursday, Aug. 14. "We had planned a
vacation with friends who had to cancel out at the last minute,
so we just decided to come to Sylva," said this Long Island,
N.Y., resident. She wanted to drive here so folks could see her
New York license tag bearing her name, but with time constraints
she and her husband flew into Knoxville, Tenn., and rented a car.
"It was our first visit to the Great Smoky Mountains - it's
beautiful here," said her husband of 49 years, Stanley Meyrowitz.
Her mother gave her the name "Sylva" from the Latin
word "Sylvan" referring to woods, trees and nature.
"Mother loved the outdoors - she would have certainly loved
Sylva," said this lady who never knew about the town bearing
her name until she vacationed in Florida. "I went into a
little shop and saw a sign that said We love Sylva, N.C.'
It made me curious, so I started researching about the town on
the Internet. Ever since, I wanted to come here, and finally I
made it." Ironically, by being here Aug. 14 she missed the
massive blackout in New York, the biggest power outage in U.S.
history. - Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
