Smoky Mountain rolled to an 8-1 non-conference
soccer victory at Murphy on Sept. 2.
Michael Tennant had two goals and an assist for the Mustangs.
"It was a game we scheduled to follow the Asheville game
because we wanted to regain some confidence," Coach Dolphus
Brown said. "We got to play a lot of people."
Grant Schallock opened the scoring with a goal from 8 yards
out 16 minutes into the contest. Kirk Childress provided the
assist.
Tennant took a diagonal pass from Chris Wofford and put the
ball in from 7 yards away for a 2-0 lead at the 22-minute mark.
Two goals within 30 seconds upped the margin to 4-0. Aaron Whatley
drilled a shot to the far post from 25 yards out at the 27:30
mark. The goal was set up by Coleman Corzine's drop pass. A
half minute later, David White one-touched the ball in from
16 yards away after receiving a diagonal pass from Tennant.
Tennant's second goal came as the result of a give and go with
White at the 30-minute mark. The shot from 10 yards out made
it 5-0.
The Bulldogs scored their lone goal two minutes later on a breakaway
by T.C. Moore cutting SM's halftime lead to 5-1.
Jacob Myers scored the first two goals of the second half giving
the Mustangs a 7-1 lead. The first came from 14 yards out at
the 58-minute mark after taking a diagonal pass from Eddie Noell.
Myers struck again at the 72-minute mark as a throw-in from
Brian Holliday sailed across the field with Myers knocking it
in from 10 yards out.
The final goal was by Kyle Baer, who scored from 25 yards out
at the 75-minute mark.
That goal was emotional as Baer's father was seriously injured
recently in a motorcycle accident and is hospitalized in South
Carolina.
"Kyle had told his dad he was going to score a goal for
him," Brown said.
The Mustangs dominated play with 30 shots to Murphy's four.
Walker Owen had 11 saves for the Bulldogs while SM's Bryan Newbold
had one.
