Town of Sylva and Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer
Authority crews worked late Tuesday in an effort to fix a broken
sewer pipe and repair a concrete storm drain after a sinkhole
opened Tuesday at the intersection of Main and Spring streets.
The first inkling of trouble came when the wheel of Rick Kirkpatrick's
car dropped into the hole. Investigating town maintenance personnel
discovered a large cavity under the concrete and asphalt roadway.
In digging out the area to determine the cause, they discovered
the broken sewer line and damaged drain. Repairs were expected
to be completed Wednesday afternoon, said Sylva Manager Richard
