After a second round of interviews and closed-session deliberations that lasted until after 6 p.m. Monday (Oct. 2), local school officials recessed without naming Jackson County's next superintendent of schools.
School Board Chairman Martha Queen confirmed Tuesday that five additional candidates for the school system's top job were interviewed the day before. Board members will reconvene today (Thursday) at 9 a.m. to continue their closed-session discussions. It is not likely that a superintendent will be named today, Queen said. "We're not going to do this in a hurry - I don't think this county wants us to do this a hurry," Queen said. "The board feels like this is a decision that will affect county schools for at least the next 10 years, and we're going to take our time." "We're taking our time and deliberating carefully," school board member Ray Trine said Tuesday. "We have a total of 11 strong candidates. We're very pleased with the caliber of people we had at both the first and second interviews." Two of the five applicants for superintendent interviewed this week are from Western North Carolina school systems. The six candidates interviewed Aug. 2, who remain in consideration for the school system's top administrative post, include three local administrators. |
