Local school officials Monday (July 14) filled two of three
vacant assistant principal positions, naming a second-in-command
for both Fairview and Scotts Creek elementary schools.
Both new assistant principals were on Fairview's staff during
the past school year.
Nathan Frizzell, a former Fairview teacher who became curriculum
coordinator last year, will be the school's assistant principal.
"Nathan has a wealth of both classroom and curriculum knowledge,"
said former Assistant Superintendent Nancy Sherrill. "He
did some administrative work last year, and he's knowledgeable
and levelheaded.
"He and (Fairview Principal) Dennis (Proffitt) will be
a good team to keep Fairview on the road to continuing improvement,"
Sherrill said.
Scotts Creek's new assistant principal is Katherine Alvarez
Moses, who was Fairview's seventh-grade computer teacher before
her promotion.
"We feel she's going to be taking wonderful skills to Scotts
Creek," Sherrill said. "She's organized and enthusiastic,
and she's a fast learner."
In other personnel action Monday, school board members approved
the employment of:
Blue Ridge - Richard Plotts, Spanish teacher.
Fairview - Joni Davis, second-grade teacher.
Smokey Mountain Elementary - Joyce Albright, middle-grade science
and social science.
Smoky Mountain High - Alexander Boss, French/Spanish teacher;
and Marcie Case, math teacher.
Countywide - Paul Strop, migrant recruiter/LEP/ESL teacher;
and Teresa Haney-Hollifield, instructional specialist (lead
teacher).
Board members approved the transfer of Colleen Betz from the
Superintendent's Office to office support at SMES.
Sherrie Dillard was approved as a bus driver.
Board members accepted resignations from Sarah DuPree, exceptional
children's assistant, Fairview; Denise White, media coordinator,
SMES; Staci Wood, middle-grade language arts teacher, SMES;
Neil Hawken, middle- grade teacher, SMES; Edward Renz, math
teacher, SMHS; and Michael Belue, after school program assistant,
Cullowhee Valley.
In their only non-personnel decision, board members changed
their next meeting from Monday, July 28, to Tuesday, July 29,
at 6 p.m.
