Red Hat societies come to town

Holly Cove Redhatters, members of the nationwide Red Hat Society, enjoy Jackson County outings together every other week during the summer. The women outfit themselves based on this line from Jenny Joseph poem: "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me." The Red Hat Society, which is composed of mature women over 50, now boast 67,000 members nationwide. A new chapter, Phancy Hats, has just formed in Sylva. Contact Sarah Altman at 586-1009 for details on how to join. The long-time seasonal campers at Holly Cove RV Resort in Whittier include Joyce Revis (left) of Sylva, whom out-of-town campers have dubbed "Queen Mum." Other are, from left, Carlene Williams of Winterville, Ga., Nancy Potter of Sarasota, Fla., Revis, Sarah Kornegay of Millbrook, Ala., Janice Heyen of Niceville, Fla., Phyllis Shearer of Okeechobee, Fla., Louise Rake of St. Augustine, Fla., Pat Edmonds of Hernado, Fla., Ann Dudley of Danielsville, Ga., and Mira Parker of Grand Island, Fla. Phancy Hats of Sylva is a brand new chapter of the Red Hat Society and will have its first tea next month.

"This group is for all those women who are lucky enough to be 50 and older, who believe that now is the best of times and who have decided fun is a priority," said organizer Sarah Altman.

Sue Ellen Cooper of California formed the Red Hat Society based on Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning," which reads in part: "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me."

There are now more than 10,000 chapters nationwide, including the Holly Cove Redhatters in Jackson County.

"The whole purpose of the Red Hat Society is to get together with like-minded individuals in your local chapter on a monthly basis and do fun things," Altman said.

Events can include teas, picnics, trips and shopping sprees. Each group decides what the events will be. There are no rules, just suggestions.

You must be a woman of 50 or over and attend functions in full regalia, wearing a red hat and purple outfit.
Junior postulates, considered "Ladies in Waiting" until they reach age 50, have conditional membership and wear pink hats and lavender clothing.

Chapter members may appoint themselves to any office they choose, such as Queen Mother, Vice Mother, Hysterian (who keeps a scrapbook of group functions) Sergeant-in-Gloves and Anti-Parliamentarian, who makes sure no one makes any rules.

The Red Hat Society can be found on the web at www.redhatsociety.com.
