Board names assistant principal at Blue Ridge

By Lynn Hotaling

Local school officials filled one of four school administrative vacancies Monday (June 23) by naming an assistant principal for the county's smallest school.

Veteran Fayetteville educator Kelly Sports-Evans will take over as second-in-command at K-12 Blue Ridge School in southern Jackson County, Superintendent Mack McCary said Tuesday. Sports-Evans will fill the vacancy left when former Assistant Principal Roy Douthitt was named principal earlier this month.

Douthitt replaced Lib Balcerek, who retired in May.

Assistant principal vacancies remain at Fairview, where Assistant Principal Dennis Proffitt will replace Principal Sue Nations, who is leaving the school to become assistant superintendent; Smoky Mountain High, where Assistant Principal Tinnie Salzano stepped down to return to the classroom; and at Scotts Creek, where Assistant Principal Steve Jones was recently transferred to the Central Office to be director of school system improvement.

McCary said he expects the assistant principal vacancies to be filled in July.

Another position he expects to fill in the next month or so is school system vocational director, the superintendent said. Though Jackson County has had a full-time vocational director in the past, Arlin Middleton, who will retire at the end of August, has directed both vocational education and maintenance for the past six years.

Though Jones is going to the Central Office as Middleton's replacement, vocational supervision duties will not be part of Jones's new job, McCary said.
