After a Sept. 7 confrontation with a Christian street preacher
in Sylva's Poteet Park, members of Sylvan Hearth Pagan Temple
will move their meetings from the town park.
High Priestess Lianna Costantino-Cardon announced the change Monday.
"This is a conciliatory gesture toward the community,"
said Costantino-Cardon.
The controversy, detailed in the Sept. 11 edition of The Sylva
Herald, was due to a "misunderstanding," Costantino-Cardon
said.
Events scheduled the first and second Sundays at Poteet Park were
intended to be "get-togethers" and not worship services,
the high priestess said.
"Our worship services will be held on private property,"
she said.
The Rev. Larry Perry, pastor of Tuckasegee Baptist Church, objected
to pagan services at the municipal park during a Sept. 4 meeting
of Sylva's Town Board.
Costantino-Cardon said material Perry passed out during that meeting
did not come from her group's Web site and indicated she would
attend the Sylva board's Oct. 2 session to clear up any misconceptions.
Costantino-Cardon did not announce the location of upcoming meetings.
