KOLD now BOLD in its efforts to keep public library downtown

By Lynn Hotaling

Downtown library supporters are no longer KOLD; now they're BOLD.

At the most recent Keep Our Library Downtown (KOLD) meeting, group members voted to change their organization's name to BOLD, or Build Our Library Downtown, said Phyllis Foxx.

"The action was taken in light of the fact that the citizens involved with keeping the Jackson County Public Library downtown also want to build a bigger, better library downtown," Foxx said.

The grassroots group formed earlier this spring when Jackson County commissioners announced plans to move the public library from its downtown location to the Southwestern Community College campus near Webster. A petition drive garnered some 2,700 signatures of those in support of the facility remaining on Sylva's Main Street.

BOLD has issued an invitation those interested in serving on the library task force to be appointed by the county commissioners to volunteer for the position by calling their respective representative.

"Each commissioner will make a recommendation of someone from his or her district to serve on this important committee," Foxx said. "The task force will make a recommendation to the county commissioners in March 2004 regarding a joint library with SCC."

Those unsure of which county commissioner represents them can call Jackson County Manager Ken Westmoreland for information at 586-7580.

BOLD's next scheduled meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Sylva Town Hall. "As always, the public is invited to all BOLD meetings," said Foxx.
