HEMC lineman burned by electrical contact

By Rose Hooper

A 15-year-veteran of Haywood Electric Membership Corp. received electrical contact to the hand early Monday morning, Sept. 22.

Tony Smith was working to restore power to the Johns Creek section of Caney Fork when the accident occurred around 8 a.m., according to Ken Thomas, HEMC manager of marketing and communications.

Smith, who suffered burns, remained in stable condition Wednesday, said Thomas.

Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe secured a landing site at East LaPorte for the Mission-St. Joseph Health System MAMA helicopter, but heavy morning fog prevented flight over the Balsam Mountains.

Smith was transported by ambulance to the Belk parking lot in Waynesville where he was airlifted to the Asheville health center.

The lineman, who works out of HEMC's Toxaway District Office, was then flown to Wake Forest University Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where he remained as of press time.

An accident investigation is under way, Thomas said.
