Texas singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith, a longtime
critics' darling for her ability to straddle the boundaries
between folk and country music, performed before a crowd of
nearly 5,000 Friday at the second annual CulloWHEE ArtsFest.
Griffith has written some of country music's most enduring compositions,
including Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson's "Gulf Coast Highway,"
Kathy Mattea's "Love at the Five and Dime" and "Listen to the
Radio," and Suzy Bogguss' "Outbound Plane." Since debuting in
the late 1970s, she has earned five Grammy nominations, winning
the award in 1993 for her recording "Other Voices, Other Rooms."
