Town
of Sylva personnel including Jim Howell, left, and Mike Pressley
began in-house trash pickup Oct. 1 in the town-owned garbage
truck that arrived last month. More than 6 tons of trash were
collected the first day with no callbacks, Public Works Director
Daryl Cheatham said. Existing pickup schedules will remain in
effect, said town Manager Richard McHargue. Sylva officials
decided last spring to switch to in-house trash collection after
years of contracting with private haulers. Town leaders anticipate
an annual cost savings of about $30,000, McHargue said.
