Lost in the halls on her first day of high
school, Smoky Mountain freshman Kristi Whitfield gets a quick
geography lesson from math teacher Mary Sue Casey. Interim Principal
Alex Bell said the first day of school (Monday) went smoother
than he'd expected. "I was very pleased," Bell said. "Traffic
is going to be congested during construction, but it moved better
than I thought it would." The first day was also smooth on both
ends of the class extremes, he said. "Seniors had a parade and
enjoyed being seniors. The freshmen were a little nervous, but
that's to be expected." Some 977 students were registered for
school as of Monday, with anticipated late arrivals likely to
up the numbers by the 10-day official count, said Bell. - Herald
