Late afternoon rain gave way to clear skies
Friday as thousands thronged Main Street for the annual Fourth
of July fireworks display. Sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation
and Parks Department, this year's show lived up to its advance
billing: It was both unique and spectacular. "This year's crowd
was the largest I've ever seen," said rec department director
Jeff Carpenter, who credited the Sylva Police Department with
keeping things organized and orderly. "It takes a lot of hard
work to put on an event like the downtown Fourth of July celebration,"
Carpenter said. "Thanks to everyone who helped." For more glimpses
