Plans continuing for Championship Night

Smoky Mountain athletic officials continue to make plans for Championship Night set for Friday, Oct. 17, when the Mustang football team will play Franklin at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Members of all state championship teams from Sylva-Webster, Cullowhee and Smoky Mountain will be honored as well as members of S-W's national championship band and individual state champions from the three schools.

S-W won state football titles in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1973 and 1980. The Golden Eagles took baseball crowns in 1974 and 1977, and the band won the Grand National Championship in 1979.

Cullowhee won a state baseball title in 1975.

The schools combined to form Smoky Mountain in 1988. SM captured state volleyball championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

"We really need everybody's help trying to spread the word to get everyone to come and be involved," Athletic Director Si Simmons said.

He wants friends and family members of eligible athletes and band members to let them know about the plans. No pre-registration is necessary.

A reception is planned for 6 p.m. in the school's new cafeteria. All those attending will be recognized at halftime of the football game.
