By an almost 2-1 margin, Cashiers residents
Tuesday emphatically said "no" to incorporation. Two
of the 302 votes against the effort were cast by Erin Watson (center)
and Melba Dillard (right), who received assistance from Ruth Bryson,
while 161 voters were in favor. "I voted against it because
I think it will be better for Cashiers if we are not incorporated,"
Watson said. "I voted against it, I don't deny it,"
said Dillard, who listed taxes and additional governmental control
as reasons for her "no" vote. Voter turnout was large,
said county elections Supervisor Lisa Lovedahl-Lehman. "We
were very pleased with election day," she said. "Everything
went smoothly. We had a 64 percent turnout, which is one of the
highest voting percentages I've seen in Jackson County within
the last 10 years." Word of the outcome reached Jackson County
commissioners at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday as they were meeting in Sylva.
Board members indicated they'll take up a community-based zoning
initiative for Cashiers Tuesday, Aug. 19. Board action was delayed
until the incorporation issue was put to rest. - Herald photo
