The Sylva Herald's advertising staff captured
a total of four awards recently in the N.C. Press Association's
Best Ad contest. Awards were presented June 13 in Chapel Hill.
Advertising Manager Margo Gray won three individual awards.
She placed third in Best Spot Color Retail for an advertisement
she designed for Ray's Florist in Dillsboro Court. Gray's other
third-place wins came in the Best Spot Color Apparel, Jewelry
and Accessories for an ad she created for Judy's Bridal and
Formal Wear of Sylva, and in Best Use of Spot Color with an
ad for Main Street's Bessie May & Co.
Gray and other members of The Herald's ad department - Janis
Extine, Sherry Peek and Kelly Timco - captured a second-place
staff award for Best Use of Spot Color in an ad designed for
the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department that highlighted
2002's downtown Fourth of July festivities.
Herald Publisher Jim Gray said he was pleased by the advertising
department's strong showing in the statewide competition.
"These awards say a lot about the caliber of ad support
our newspaper is able to offer its retail customers," he
said.
"I think our local businesses really benefit from the expertise
of our award-winning advertising staff," the publisher
said. "I'm really proud of the good job they do every week
and happy they've received this recognition."
Peek attended the advertising conference in Chapel Hill to accept
the staff's awards.
