The Western North Carolina Wagon Train passed through Sylva just before noon Saturday (June 29). Horses and riders left Andrews July 24 and plan to complete their 163-mile trip today with a Fourth of July parade in Brevard. Donald Ray Luther drove the lead wagon this year as he has 43 times since his first trip 46 years ago. Many of the 300 or so riders have returned year after year since 1957. "It's the longest, continuous running wagon train in the nation," Luther said. - Herald photo by Greg Undeen
