River, rail cleanup is Saturday

Graybill

Along with The Sylva Herald, the Nantahala Outdoor Center and Great Smoky Mountains Railway are among the sponsors for this Saturday's 17th annual Tuckaseigee River Cleanup. Western Carolina University students like Joey Faulkner, left, along with other community volunteers, will pick up trash while they raft the 22-mile river corridor. Railroad employees like conductor Jim Matthews will stop the train at strategic places between Dillsboro and Barkers Creek to help load the trash. Cash prizes will be awarded to the on- and off-campus groups with the most people participating in the event. Registration will be held at 11 a.m. at the WCU University Center. For more information, call 227-3620.
