Jerry King, executive director of the Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority since its creation 10 years ago, resigned Tuesday.

Saying he is "ready to retire," King submitted his resignation to the TWSA board following a closed session for personnel. King's action came voluntarily, board members said, and is effective Dec. 31.

King declined to comment Tuesday about the resignation.

"(King) has been talking about it for some time now," said board member Keith Ward.

"I knew it was coming," said TWSA Chairman Mickey Luker. "I'd asked him a while back to postpone it, but now seems like a good time for him to do it."

King became executive director in July 1992, the same month the authority was officially established.

"Jerry has served TWSA well," Luker said. "He got it going from ground zero; he has doubled the number of customers, and we've never operated in the red."

King initiated and led several capital improvements during his tenure, including providing water and sewer lines along Scotts Creek, the development of a new water treatment plant in Cullowhee, water and sewer lines across the Tuckaseigee River in Dillsboro, several new pumping stations, and standby power at TWSA's sewer plants, Luker said.

"Our plans are to put together a search committee in October," Luker said about TWSA's search for King's successor. "We may not have a replacement ready the day Jerry retires, but we'll have one in place right after the first of the year."

A native of Swannanoa, King was formerly town manager of Lake Lure. Prior to that he was assistant city manager and personnel director for Cocoa, Fla.

King, who received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Osceola University, has been a member of the N.C. League of Municipalities, the N.C. County and City Managers Association and was selected for "Who's Who in Government."
