Ready, set, splash!

Diving Boy

Owen Buckner, 12, of York, Pa., was one of the first to cause ripples in Sylva's Roscoe Poteet swimming pool when it opened to the public Friday, July 6, after a nine-month renovation project. Buckner, who was in town last week visiting is grandfather Maurice Reynolds of East Fork, took the plunge off the pool's new diving board. Attendance at the pool over the weekend reached near records, said county recreation director Jeff Carpenter. Official grand opening ceremonies at the pool have been planned for this Sunday, July 15, at 1 p.m., said Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver. Town leaders committed almost $700,000 to the renovation, which included upgrading and enlarging the 31-year-old facility, adding a swimming lane and refurbishing the dressing rooms. - Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff
