SMHS graduate misses ceremony after stabbing

By Lisa Majors-Duff

A prospective Smoky Mountain High graduate missed Monday's ceremony after being stabbed earlier in the day.

Michael DeWayne Putman, who was one of 207 seniors awarded diplomas, received his sheepskin in absentia at the Ramsey Center.

Charged with assaulting Putman approximately six hours earlier was Brooke Aaron McLaughlin, 22, of Sylva. He was being held at the Jackson County Jail Tuesday under a $35,000 secured bond, facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, said Sheriff's Department Detective David Grant.

Officers with both the Sheriff's Department and the Western Carolina University Police Department were called to the Triple B No. 2 in Cullowhee at about 1 p.m., Grant said. WCU Police officer Charles Crisp detained the suspect as he attempted to flee, said Grant.

The cause of the altercation between McLaughlin and Putman, who remained a patient at Harris Regional Hospital Tuesday, remained unclear as of press time, Grant said. The incident continues to be investigated.
