Threats of snow Saturday night were laughed at by many in the area who had spent Saturday catching up on outdoor chores. But Mother Nature had the last laugh, when those same residents awoke Sunday to lawns coated with frosty snow. Reports from this Balsam neighborhood put the snow depth at about 7 inches by early morning, with another inch falling throughout the day. No major accidents were reported on highway and secondary roads due to weather conditions, as Department of Transportation crews spent the day scraping and salting roads. Below-freezing temperatures Sunday night left some roads ice-covered on Monday morning, though most signs of winter had disappeared by afternoon. Temperatures reached the upper 70s by mid-week, putting the "spring" back into "spring break" for area school children enjoying a weeklong holiday. - Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff
