More than just the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed due to recent snow and ice conditions. Most Jackson County students received four extra days of winter vacation after a light snow fell Wednesday, Jan. 2, preventing their Thursday, Jan. 3, return to the classroom. More snow and below-freezing temperatures found the area again over the weekend, leaving behind about an inch of frozen precipitation, much less than the 6 inches predicted. Students, with the exception of those who attend Blue Ridge School in the southern end of the county, returned to school yesterday (Jan. 9) after clear skies and warmer temperatures arrived. - Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff
