Photo contest submissions sought

By Lisa Majors-Duff

By Lisa Majors-Duff The warm weather of late is not the only indication that spring is right around the corner. It's also time to enter The Sylva Herald's annual spring photo contest.

Readers are invited to submit photos in the newspaper's fourth "Mountain Spring" photography contest. Some of the best photos - including those deemed to be the first-, second- and third-place winners - will be displayed during Sylva's "Greening Up the Mountains" festival Saturday, April 28. Winners will also be prominently displayed in the newspaper in May.

Perry Kelly of Cullowhee, president of the Jackson County Visual Arts Association, will serve as this year's judge.

Photographs submitted should be in color and must be taken by the entrant. Photos may have been taken at any time, not necessarily this spring. Participants may enter up to two photos for consideration.

Photos should be at least 5 by 7 inches and may be mounted or unmounted. No frames, please. They may not be computer enhanced.

The photos should reflect the theme, "Mountain Spring," and should be outdoor scenes displaying the beauty and renewal of spring. Preference will be given to photos taken in the Appalachian and Western North Carolina regions.

Also in its fourth year, "Greening Up the Mountains" is a downtown street festival sponsored by Sylva Partners in Renewal. Festival goers will be invited to watch traditional craft demonstrations, cheer on area Boy Scouts during their Cubmobile race and listen to local entertainment, including Smoky Mountain Drum 'n' Bass, Matt Stillwell and the Queen Family. The day will also focus attention on Earth Day, with activities centered around recycling, composting and other ways to keep the environment clean. Food and craft vendors will also be on hand.

The deadline for entering The Sylva Herald's "Mountain Spring" photo contest is Wednesday, April 11, at 5 p.m. For a complete list of contest rules and an application form, call The Sylva Herald newsroom at 586-2611; stop by our Main Street office; or email us at news@thesylvaherald.com.
