Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver, left, pitches in to help Noble Green supporters plant a scarlet oak in the Ritz parking lot in downtown Sylva. The ceremony held April 7 marked the planting of Noble Green's first tree, said founder Stan Veraart, right. It's Noble Green's mission to give book-buyers an opportunity to donate 25 cents, which is then used to purchase trees to replace those lost to the printing industry. "This way the resources used to make the book are given back to nature," Veraart said. Not only is the Ritz oak Noble Green's first, it has also been designated the county's "Sesquicentennial Tree" and will be officially presented to county Manager Jay Denton during Sylva's Greening Up the Mountains festival Saturday, April 28. Also helping to plant the tree Saturday were Silas Barr (second from left) and Chris Wilcox.
