A veteran county educator has been tapped to be the local school system's second in command.

Sue Nations, principal of Fairview Elementary since 1994, will become assistant superintendent July 1 when Nancy Sherrill retires.

Members of the Jackson County Board of Education acted May 6 to approve Superintendent Mack McCary's recommendation to name Nations assistant superintendent.

Nations' salary will be $93,000 per year and will be paid from a combination of state and federal funds, said school system finance officer David Steinbicker. Her contract will be for four years, McCary said.

"I'm thrilled," McCary said Wednesday morning. "She is very loyal to her school, but we convinced her we needed her for all the schools."

Nations did not apply for the position of assistant superintendent, McCary said, but he is grateful she accepted it.

"After further conversations with her, she agreed to put her talents and expertise to work in helping all schools in our district," he said.

The school system had a number of well-qualified candidates from both inside and outside the district, McCary said, and school leaders decided Nations "is the best person to help this district meet the challenges we are facing." "I'm excited, but it's bittersweet - I love Fairview," Nations said Wednesday morning. ģIt will be a new adventure and a big challenge."

Nations, who began her teaching career as a Teacher Corps intern in 1974, was an assistant principal at Smoky Mountain High before her move to Fairview. She went to the high school in 1988, the year Sylva-Webster and Cullowhee were consolidated to form SMHS.

Before becoming an administrator, Nations taught fourth grade at Fairview from 1974 through 1988. A 1965 graduate of Sylva-Webster, Nations holds bachelor's, master's and education supervision degrees from Western Carolina University.

Current SMHS Principal Kenny Nicholson, who was principal at Fairview from 1984 until 1994, said he thought Nations is a good choice for assistant superintendent.

"I have the highest admiration for Sue," Nicholson said Wednesday. ģI think she'll do a great job as assistant superintendent."
