"Transformation Through Forgiveness," a traveling monument in honor of Native American cultural contributions, was unveiled Monday in Cherokee as part of the community's annual Veterans Day ceremony. Sculptor Francis Jansen (at podium), a Dutch immigrant to the United States, was on hand for the unveiling and explained that for too long people have used the color of someone's hair or skin to torment one another. "Forgiveness is necessary to move beyond man's inhumanity to man," said Jansen, who has had no formal training in sculpture. "This is a special day for the Cherokee people," said Mary Jane Letts, who worked with members of Tribal Council to bring the exhibit to Cherokee. "We are privileged to have this monument here for the next year. And it is my hope that it will inspire our young artists to create similar sculptures." - Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff
