Lighting the way

Luminare Smoky Mountain High sophomore Sarah Wong lights the first candles at Riverwood Shops Dec. 6 on the initial night of Dillsboro's annual Festival of Lights and Luminaries. More than 2,500 candles lined the village streets, lighting the way for visitors during the merchants' holiday open house. Crowds were good both Friday and Saturday nights, said shop owner Mona Gersky, and the festival's first weekend went well. Dillsboro will light candles again this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14, for the final two nights of this year's event. Lighting the luminaries has been a December tradition in Dillsboro since 1984. -Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling
