In an effort to examine economic development initiatives in Western North Carolina, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue rode the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad from Dillsboro to Bryson City Monday. Perdue returned to WNC this week after visiting the area this past winter. On this trip Perdue said she was taking a close look at roads and other infrastructure needs, as well as tourist attractions. "It's great to see all these tourists riding the train and spending money here in Dillsboro," Perdue said. Other local stops on the lieutenant governor's trip included a Region A/Southwestern Commission reception in Swain County and a visit to Cherokee, where she saw the outdoor drama "Unto These Hills." - Herald photo by Lisa Majors-Duff
