Even the weather cooperated as the largest crowd ever flocked to Saturday's fifth Greening Up the Mountains festival. Some 7,500 were on hand for Sylva's annual spring extravaganza combining mountain heritage, Earth Day activities, music and fun. Festival-goers lined up for the climbing wall in front of Blackrock Outdoor Co., and local runners competed in the inaugural Greening Up 5K run. Children marveled at exotic animals, drew with chalk on Main Street and clambered through a Vietnam-era combat helicopter. Festival chairman Greg Duff termed this yearıs event the most successful ever and thanked local law enforcement personnel for their support. - Herald photos by Rose Hooper, Lisa Majors-Duff, Kelly Timco and Lynn Hotaling, with additional photos courtesy of Nathan Hopper Click here to read more...
