Cook honored

Salute Inspirations' founder and pianist Martin Cook, a former member of the Jackson County Board of Education, was inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame May 13 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Cook, a resident of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, was a chemistry teacher at Swain County High when he and several of his students formed the Inspirations almost 40 years ago. "Martin Cook is a man of tremendous foresight who has helped shape the path and direction of Southern Gospel Music," states his Hall of Fame plaque, which also chronicles highlights of Cook's music career. Cook, 66, received Southern gospel music's most prestigious award, the Marvin Norcross Award, late last year at the Singing News Fan Awards in Louisville, Ky.
