Collage In the days following the unprecedented Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Jackson County residents showed their patriotism in a number of ways including a Thursday night candlelight service on the courthouse steps, a Friday morning American Spirit Day at Cullowhee Valley School and a Sunday morning peace rally at the courthouse fountain. Emergency service personnel collected money, area residents donated blood, Kiwanis members placed flags along Main Street, local law enforcement officers tied red, white and blue ribbons on squad cars and passed them out to help others show support, and school children collected supplies and money for victims of the tragedy. Still to come are Sylva's March for American Unity sponsored by town and county officials and a memorial service in Cherokee. - Herald photos by Lynn Hotaling and Rose Hooper; other photos courtesy of Livingston Kelley and Mike Ensley
