This SBA Inc. cell tower on U.S. 74 just east of Sylva was one of the last to be erected prior to a 90-day moratorium on wireless communication tower construction approved by Jackson County commissioners Aug. 2. County planners have been asked to investigate the cell tower issue during the suspension of activity and to make a recommendation, which could include regulations regarding tower height, location and appearance. In that effort, planning board members will meet Tuesday, Aug. 14, with industry representatives from Ramcell, SBA Inc. and Crown Castle, as well as Duke Energy and Metrosite, a company that sites cell towers on government-owned property for a fee. Concerns about cell tower construction first came to commissioners' attention in June when several Cashiers residents pleaded for intervention regarding a tower under construction on Laurel Knob.
