Herald sports editor wins statewide award

Cary Phillips The Sylva Herald brought home one award last week from the N.C. Press Association's 76th Winter Institute in Chapel Hill.

Sports Editor Carey Phillips won third place in sports coverage in the association's community newspaper 3,500-10,000 circulation division.

Phillips, a one-man department, writes, prepares and edits all the information that appears in the newspaper's sports section each week, said Herald Publisher Jim Gray.

"This award represents quite an honor," said Gray. "Carey works hard every week to bring our readers complete and comprehensive sports coverage. It's good to see his efforts receive statewide recognition."

Phillips' winning entry consisted of two sports sections from March 2001. Key stories during that period included state high school basketball and wrestling tournament play; Southern Conference basketball; and an "old-timers" basketball game featuring past hoops stars like Smoky Mountain High Principal Kenny Nicholson and former Superintendent Charlie McConnell.

"Lots of info. Busy writer," said the Minnesota journalist who judged the category.

Phillips accepted his award from Gov. Mike Easley Jan. 24 in Chapel Hill.

Herald Associate Editor Lynn Hotaling also attended the conference.
