N.C. Department of Transportation workers are repairing the swinging bridge below Barkers Creek, listed officially as bridge No. 352. Built in 1964, the structure is Jackson Countyıs only remaining DOT swinging bridge, according to transportation supervisor Bill Childers. The bridge, which spans the Tuckaseigee River, had been closed because of unsafe conditions. Rusted main cables have rubbed holes in the connecting cables, which are being replaced, along with the flooring and metal meshing, Childers said. 'It will look like a shiny, new bridge,' Childers said of the project, which should take three or four weeks to complete, depending on weather. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
