Mustangs will host Franklin; ‘Save the Warmth’ benefit set

Basketball teams from Smoky Mountain and Franklin will renew their rivalry Friday when they clash for the first time this season at the SM gym.

Action will begin at 4 p.m. with the JV women followed by the JV men, varsity women and varsity men.

In addition to basketball heating up the community, fans will have a chance to participate in the “Save the Warmth” program as donations will be taken for the program.

“Save the Warmth,” the brainchild of Mountain Projects Director Patsy Dowling, is an initiative in Jackson County that will bring volunteers into nearly 70 homes to weather proof the structures in preparation for winter.

Volunteers will weather-strip, cover windows, caulk, wrap hot water heaters and minimize the ways that heat can be lost, Dowling said, adding that the project also aims to educate community members about ways to minimize home heat loss.

A number of local agencies and officials are involved in the program as well.

To volunteer, make a donation or for more information, call Dowling at (828) 452-1447, ext. 102, or Jackson County Department of Social Services Director Bob Cochran at 586-5546.

The Mustangs will be in action two more times in the coming week.

The men only will face Owen on Saturday in a game postponed from Monday due to snow. The JVs will start at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity.

The men and women will travel to Asheville on Tuesday. Games will be on a regular schedule starting with the JV women at 4 p.m.

The teams played Enka at home Tuesday.

The Lady Mustangs (2-1) won 55-42 behind 26 points from Ashley Robinson. Jordan Cagle added 13 points, and Flea Johnson had 10.

The Mustang men (2-0) took a 68-57 victory as Colton Hunt scored 23 points. Jackson Simmons and Dillon Dunford added 13 and 11, respectively.

Details of Tuesday’s games will be in next week’s Herald.
