Mustang swimmers come in second at WAC kickoff meet
Smoky Mountain’s men’s swimming team placed second and the women were fourth in the Western Athletic Conference Kickoff Meet held Nov. 22 at Mars Hill.
Patrick Savell and Paul Heckert won individual events for the men while Annelise Davis won for the women. The men and women both had a relay team come out on top.
“I was very pleased with the meet,” Coach Peter Hughes said. “We were low in numbers but high in point scoring. There were improved times from all the swimmers, and the third boys relay automatically qualified for state.”
West Henderson won the men’s meet with 220 points to SM’s 124. East Henderson had 55, and North Henderson had 24.
Those placing for the Mustang men included:
100 butterfly – Savell, first, 1:04.18.
100 breaststroke – Heckert, first, 1:17.97; Tanner Johnson, fourth, 1:36.57.
200 freestyle relay – Savell, Heckert, Connor Davis and Ronnie Mau, first, 1:47.47; Taylor Beckett, Adam Ray, Johnson and Michael Watkins, seventh, 2:28.40.
200 medley relay – Billy Larch, Ray, Johnson and Beckett, fourth, 2:53.06.
200 free – Davis, third, 2:25.56; Watkins, fourth, 3:08.36.
200 individual medley – Heckert, second, 2:45.76; Johnson, fourth, 3:25.87.
50 free – Mau, second, 25.91.
100 free – Mau, fourth, 1:01.46.
500 free – Savell, second, 6:31.45.
100 backstroke – Davis, second, 1:20.39; Larch, third, 1:27.84.
West also took the women’s meet with 154.5 points to East’s 108. North was third with 85.5 followed by SM with 82 and Pisgah with 18.
