Montana State rallies past WCU women
Anne Phippard and Jenny Heringer both scored 20 points as Montana State rallied for a 90-82 women’s basketball victory Saturday at MSU’s Worthington Arena.
Erica Perry and Katie Bussey both added 12 points, and Nubia Garcia had 10.
Kendra Carroll led the Lady Cats (2-3) with 17 points. She was joined in double figures by Kendra Eaton with 15 and Lauren Powell and Emily Clarke with 13 points apiece.
Western was up 51-37 with 17:45 to go in the game after a layup by Brooke Johnson, who was recently named student-athlete of the week in the Southern Conference.
Montana State reeled off the next 14 points, including eight by Phippard, for a 51-51 tie on Sarah Strand’s layup at the 14:44 mark.
WCU recovered with the next seven points, including five by Powell, to go up 58-51 with 12:28 on the clock.
The Lady Bobcats went on a 12-2 run, including five by Heringer, to lead 71-66 after Perry’s layup at the 5:06 mark.
The biggest margin was 84-74 on two Strand free throws with 42 seconds left.
Western led most of the first half after scoring 12 straight points, including four apiece by Eaton and Carroll, for a 20-11 advantage with 13:50 on the clock.
Garcia’s jumper cut the gap to 35-33 at the 3:19 mark, but WCU scored the final seven points of the half for a 42-33 lead.
Western made 46.5 percent of its field goal tries compared to MSU’s 39.7 percent.
Clarke’s 12 rebounds helped WCU to a 46-43 edge on the boards. Garcia led the Lady Bobcats with 11.
The Lady Cats were hurt by 20 turnovers while Montana State had 11.
Completing the WCU scoring were Johnson, Brittany Ferguson and Kaila’Shea Menendez, all with six, Kristen Feemster with three, Heather Swayne with two and Jessica Jackson with one.
