Defending champs roll past Lady Cats

Two-time defending national championship Tennessee pulled away late in the first half and went on to an 83-56 women’s basketball victory over Western Carolina on Nov. 25 at UT’s Thompson-Boling Arena.

Glory Johnson led the ninth-ranked Lady Vols with 15 points. Also in double figures were Shekinna Strickland with 13, Vicki Baugh with 11 and Briana Bass with 10.

Lauren Powell paced the Lady Cats with 14. Brooke Johnson followed with 12, and Emily Clarke had 11.

Clarke’s layup capped a 10-2 spurt giving WCU a 19-18 edge with 9:26 to play in the first half.

UT responded with 12 unanswered points, the last six by Baugh, to go up 30-19 at the 6:33 mark.

The Lady Vols scored the last 12 points of the half, including six by Johnson, for a 49-26 advantage.

Tennessee led 53-26 on Cait McMahan’s layup with 16:53 on the clock. The 27-point margin would be matched four times in the game, including the final score.

The Lady Vols shot 47.5 percent from the floor and held WCU to 29.8 percent.

Baugh’s 15 rebounds helped UT to a 41-34 advantage on the boards. Johnson and Kristen Feemster led the Lady Cats with five apiece.

Completing the WCU scoring were Kaila’Shea Menendez with six, Kendra Eaton with five, Tonquishea Belcher with four, Heather Swayne with three and Kendra Eaton with one.
