Ashley Robinson leads Lady Mustangs to win
Ashley Robinson scored 26 points and pulled down 17 rebounds leading Smoky Mountain to a 78-60 women’s basketball victory over Asheville on Nov. 24 at the SM gym.
Flea Johnson also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 boards. Tasha Junaluska added 16 points for the Lady Mustangs (1-1).
Melissa Brewton paced the Lady Cougars with 17 points. Stephanie Lane finished with 13, and Courtney Rogers had 10.

“It’s good to get a win against a program like Asheville,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “I was real pleased with our effort and intensity. We had some excellent passing.”
Seven points from Johnson and six by Junaluska sparked a 15-0 run for a 17-5 lead with 1:55 to play in the first period.
Asheville cut the gap to 17-12 at the quarter break.
Brooke Parton’s three-pointer extended the margin to 32-23 with 2:11 remaining in the half, and SM was up 37-29 at intermission.
Twelve unanswered points, including four by Robinson, resulted in a 51-34 lead on Junaluska’s basket with 2:32 to go in the third period, which ended with the Lady Mustangs on top 55-40.
The margin stayed in double figures throughout the final stanza. It reached 78-56 on Junaluska’s fast break layup with 56 seconds left.
Robinson hit 10 of 14 field goals and six free throws. Johnson made seven of nine field goals and three foul shots. Junaluska scored all her points from the floor.
Heather Mathis finished with eight points, Katie Spiro and Jordan Cagle both scored four, and Parton had three.
Junaluska handed out eight assists and came up with five steals Robinson and Johnson both had six assists.
SM shot 56.4 percent from the floor.
Simmons singled out Robinson, Johnson and Junaluska for their play.
The Lady Mustang JVs improved to 2-0 with a 50-40 win behind 14 points from Alex Briggs.
SM led at quarter breaks by scores of 10-4, 20-12 and 32-27.
“I was extremely proud of my girls,” Coach Ollin Dunford said. “They had been working hard, and they did a lot of growing up tonight.”
