Wofford crushes Western in league action Saturday

Wofford spotted Western Carolina an early touchdown, but the Terriers came roaring back with 42 unanswered points to crush the Catamounts (2-6, 0-4) 42-14 Saturday before 7,063 fans at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium.

The Terriers rolled up 377 yards on the ground, including 105 in only five carries by Mike Rucker.

Ben Widmyer completed all seven of his pass attempts for 129 yards.

Western’s Quan Warley picked up 91 yards in 19 carries.

Zack Jaynes completed 13 of 22 passes for 126 yards. Andy Horn came off the bench to complete 11 of 18 passes for 79 yards.

Marquel Pittman had nine receptions for 84 yards.

WCU got off to a good start by driving 86 yards in 16 plays following the opening kickoff. Jaynes completed passes of 10 and 18 yards to Pittman and 11 yards to Adam Hearns while Warley had a 10-yard run. A 12-yard pass from Jaynes to Pittman and Blake Bostic’s PAT made it 7-0 with 8:11 to go in the first quarter.

Western’s Darrel Gray fumbled a punt with Wofford’s Mike Niam recovering at the Cat 28. Rucker’s 24-yard run was followed by his 2-yard TD run. Patrick Mugan kicked the first of his six extra points for a 7-7 tie with 5:40 to play in the opening period.

WCU drove from its 25 to the Terrier 8 following the kickoff before Andrew Rogers fumbled after catching a pass with Mychael Johnson recovering at the 2.

Wofford need just three plays to cover 98 yards. Runs of 13 and 11 yards by Dano Romero got his team out of the hole. Andy Strickland then ripped off a 74-yard scoring run putting the Terriers ahead to stay, 14-7, with 13:21 remaining in the half.

On its next possession, Wofford again put together a 98-yard march, with this one taking 10 plays. Widmyer completed passes of 14 yards to Romero and 37 yards to Jeremy Marshall. His 29-yard TD pass to Strickland extended the margin to 21-7 with 7:04 on the clock.

For the second straight possession, Western drove inside the Terrier 10 but turned the ball over. Alex Goltry picked off Jaynes’ pass and returned it 86 yards to the 3. Romero scored on the next play giving Wofford a 28-7 advantage at the 1:48 mark.

A 74-yard run by Rucker on the third play of the second half put the Terriers up 35-7 with 13:48 to play in the third stanza.

Wofford made it 42-7 with a 79-yard drive in 10 plays. Highlights included Romero’s 15-yard run and Widmyer’s 10-yard pass to Strickland. The payoff was a 23-yard pass from Widmyer to Marshall with 7:31 left in the third quarter.

Western’s final TD was set up when Chaz Jackson intercepted Mitch Allen’s pass at the Terrier 39. Horn completed passes of 12 yards to Levon Curtis and 10 yards to Rogers. Horn then tossed a 3-yard TD pass to Rogers with 4:43 to go in the game. Bostic added the point after.

Seth Goldwire and Kendall Bratcher were both in on 12 tackles for Wofford.

Chris Colins led WCU’s defense with nine.
