Three SM runners are all-conference

Smoky Mountain had three runners earn all-conference honors at the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Meet held Oct. 15 at Hendersonville’s Jackson Park.

The top 10 finishers for the men and women are named all-conference.

Whitney Wagner led the Lady Mustangs as she was eighth among 60 runners in 22:00. Coach Lawson Hopper said she would have done better if not for a sprained ankle sustained during the race.

Cadence Railsback placed 10th in 22:13.

Rounding out SM’s top five were:

Katie Spiro, 28th, 24:12; Holly Setzer, 39th, 25:06; and Elizabeth Hammer, 48th, 26:30.

The Lady Mustangs were fifth out of six teams.

Adam Ray placed 10th among 48 runners in 18:57 to lead the Mustang men, who did not have enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

Josh Seay, was 45th in 24:40, and Matt Turpin finished 48th in 26:22.

“It was a great meet for us,” Hopper said. “When you have three earn all-conference, its pretty exciting.”

The regionals will be held Saturday at Jackson Park.

“We’re going to try to go hard and see if we can’t advance on to state,” Hopper said.
