Swim teams start practice next week

Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s swim teams will begin practice at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Western Carolina’s Breese Pool.

A meeting for parents is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the high school cafeteria.

The first meet is set for Nov. 15 at Franklin.

“It’s looking real good,” Coach Peter Hughes said. “We have a bunch of first time swimmers. We’ll have more boys than we’ve ever had. We should have some state qualifiers at the first meet.”

Patrick Savell will return after participating in last year’s State 2-A Meet. Also back are Paul Heckert and Ronnie Mau, who swam in a relay event at state a year ago.

“The girls team is very strong as well,” Hughes said. “We have a lot of seniors.”

Annelise Davis is back after swimming in the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the State 2-A Meet last season. They also took part in a relay as did returnees Miranda Myers and Starlyn Methany.

The schedule is as follows:

Nov. 15 – at Franklin; 22 – Western Athletic Conference Kickoff Meet at Mars Hill.

Dec. 3 – West Henderson at Cherokee; 10 – Tuscola at Cherokee; 13 – West Henderson and Asheville at Skyland; 17 – Murphy and Hiwassee Dam at Cherokee.

Jan. 10 – at Tuscola Invitational; 23 – WAC Meet at Mars Hill.
