SM records shutout victory over Eagles

Smoky Mountain recorded a 3-0 shutout at East Henderson in Western Athletic Conference soccer action Oct. 13.

“It was the beginning of a key week for us,” Coach Dolphus Brown said. “East has a lot of speed and is very much in the playoff hunt. We had to take care of business so it was a huge game. We didn’t take anything for granted although our first half was a little sluggish.”

Richard Ramirez opened the scoring at the 22-minute mark

“The ball was played into the box and knocked around,” Brown said. “It rolled to Richard, and he shot from 13 yards on the left side.”

The Mustangs made it 2-0 on Rodrigo Nogal’s goal five minutes into the second half off of a Joe Davis assist.

“Joe played the ball from the wing into the box,” the coach said. “Rodrigo settled it, turned and sent it from about 14 yards. It hit the cross bar and deflected down into the net.”

Ramirez scored the final goal at the 54-minute mark with an assist by Jarrod Couch.

“Jarrod had lifted the ball over a defender to the right,” Brown said. “Richard broke free with it. The keeper came out, and Richard lofted it over his head from 16 yards.”

SM took 25 shots to six by the Eagles. Max Macedo made four saves for the Mustangs.

The JVs played Polk at East and lost 3-1.
