Mustang wrestlers will open practice Tuesday

Smoky Mountain’s wrestlers will open practice at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the school’s wrestling room.

“It’s too early to tell,” Beane said of prospects for the coming season. “We’ve had some kids move away and we graduated several.”

Key returnees he mentioned include Chad Harper, Cruize Frady and Rush Allen.

“As for the rest, you don’t know until they show up,” Beane said. “They will be beginners except for three or four. Then it’s how fast they learn.”

The first contest will be Nov. 18 at Asheville School. Mountain Heritage will also compete in the tri-match.

A new aspect to Mustang wrestling this year is a middle school program with practices following the varsity. Tony Quinn will be the middle school coach.

“We had about 20 kids at each (elementary) school show up,” Beane said. “If that many stick with it, that would be a tremendous turnout. If the high school is ever going to be a contender, they have to start earlier.”

The schedule is as follows:

Nov. 18 – Asheville School and Mountain Heritage at Asheville School; 20 – at Murphy; 25 – Asheville School, Erwin and Owen at Owen.

Dec. 6 – at Mitchell Tournament; 9 – Asheville School; 13 – at Tuscola Tournament; 16 – Roberson and Franklin at Franklin; 20 – Saunooke Tournament at Cherokee; 23 – Swain; 26-27 – at Cherokee Tournament.

Jan. 9 – at Brevard; 13 – at East Henderson; 16 – North Henderson; 20 – at West Henderson; 23 – Pisgah, Tuscola and Murphy; 27 – Christ School.
