Lady Mustangs lose to Pisgah in final volleyball match of season

Smoky Mountain’s volleyball team ended its season at home Oct. 14 with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-17 loss to Pisgah.

Although the Lady Mustangs (5-18, 0-10) finished winless in the Western Athletic Conference for the third straight season, Coach Cindi Simmons was pleased with the improvement she saw during her first season back at the helm after a four-year absence.

“I’m proud of how we competed,” she said. “We never gave up and continued to work hard all year. I feel like we’ve laid a good foundation for the future. The seniors provided leadership and have meant so much to the program and this year’s team. My only regret is I would like to have them for another year.”

The Sugar Bears jumped to an 11-1 lead in the first game and breezed to the win. SM’s best run came when Annelise Davis served three points and Jordan Cagle had a kill, but they still trailed 20-10.

Game two was close all the way with neither team up by more than two points until the final margin. The Lady Mustangs led as late as 19-17 after two points from Madee Seagle and Cagle’s kill.

Pisgah took control in the third game at 16-8. Shayla Jackson’s three points, including two aces, narrowed the gap to 22-16 before the Sugar Bears clinched the match.

Cagle put down 10 kills and had 11 digs. Katie Spiro and Chandler Stalcup had nine and eight assists, respectively.

Davis led in service points with eight while serving 93.3 percent. Not missing a serve were Cagle (nine) and Spiro (five). Team serving was 90.7 percent.

The Lady Mustang JVs ended the year 9-11 with a 25-19, 16-25, 25-22 loss.

“I had a very enjoyable experience with these girls,” Coach Nikki Toedtman said. “They made great improvement and worked hard every day in practice. I look forward to seeing what they can do next year.”
