Back then
Dan Moore, right, who was North Carolina’s governor from 1965-69 and later served on the state Supreme Court, stands on Main Street with pharmacist Gilbert Bess, who operated Sylva Pharmacy. The drug store was located in the building that now houses Hollifield Jewelers. This photo, which was submitted by Bess’ daughter, June Bess Anderson of Virginia and is thought to date from the 1920s, is among some 224 images contained in the recent book “Sylva,” which was published Sept. 15 by Arcadia Publishing. A portion of the proceeds from the book will benefit the Jackson County Genealogical Society, and City Lights Bookstore is donating $1 from each book sold this year to the new library building fund. The Sylva Herald features a “Back Then” or “Then and Now” photo each week and welcomes reader photos; for information about submitting photos, contact Photo Editor Nick Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or nick@thesylvaherald.com. |
